In the 2018 season a Ukrainian couple asked me about elephant watching near Nilaveli.
They did not want a packed safari bus. They wanted to see if the land behind this coast still held wild life at the edge of ordinary work — paddy, water, evening light.
I am Sas. Most of my days are sea days. That afternoon we left the beach line and drove inland about 25 kilometres to paddy country against the jungle edge, to a large pond called Maduva Kulam.
Closer to Nilaveli there is another water place guests ask about: the lotus pond (Thamara Kulam) near the 8th mile post — lotus and Alli flowers, and early crocodiles on the bank. Two different inland stops; both are real, neither is a zoo timetable.

One line: Inland water and paddy edges can show elephants or crocodiles; plan the place and the hour — wildlife decides the rest.
Maduva Kulam — elephants at the paddy pond
Maduva Kulam is a big pond. The paddy lands around it take irrigation from that water. Fishing goes on there too. It is working countryside, not an empty park.
In the pond we saw crocodiles. Around 4:30 to 5:30 pm, groups of elephants came to drink.
Because fields are cultivated and people are often present, the setting feels different from deep isolated forest — but elephants are still large wild animals. You watch from a sensible distance. You do not invent bravery at the bank.
Trust on that road
The Ukrainian lady was pregnant during the trip. They still chose to come. They said they trusted me. When someone carries a child and still gets into your vehicle for a nature afternoon, the job is simple: steady driving, clear timing, no risks for a photograph, calm behaviour.
They enjoyed the evening. I was happy to show them a side of this district that many sea-only itineraries never open.
Elephants are not guaranteed every date. We plan the window and the place. The animals decide the rest.
Thamara Kulam — lotus pond at the 8th mile
Near Nilaveli, at about the 8th mile post, there is a pond people call Thamara Kulam — the lotus pond.
It is a beautiful lake, often surrounded by lotus and Alli flowers. It is not far from Nilaveli, so it suits a shorter outing than the Maduva Kulam drive.
Early morning is the time many notice: crocodiles come onto the land to take the sun. Families with children sometimes enjoy this as quiet sightseeing — still with clear distance and no teasing of the animals. Crocodiles are wild. Watch; do not approach.
If you want a closer water-level view, we can arrange kayak crocodile watching on request. It costs a little more than a bank-side stop, and for many guests it is the better experience — only when conditions and safety make sense that day.
How these places fit a Nilaveli stay
| Place | Character | Typical window |
| Maduva Kulam | Inland ~25 km · paddy · elephants at dusk (when they come) | Late afternoon |
| Thamara Kulam (lotus pond) | Near 8th mile · lotus / Alli · crocodiles sunning | Early morning |
| Lagoon half-day | Mangroves, quieter water, sunset bridge vibe | Soft day / evening |
None of these replace a reef or open-sea morning. They are optional land or lagoon chapters when you have time and want something beyond the towel line.
Honest limits

If you want to ask
Message on WhatsApp with your dates, whether you prefer elephants (inland) or lotus pond / crocodiles (near Nilaveli), and if children or pregnancy are part of the group. We answer for that day — vehicle, timing and whether kayak is sensible.
I will not sell wildlife as a daily factory product. I will tell you when a quiet inland or lotus-pond run makes sense, and when rest or the sea is the better choice.
