​Nilaveli Snorkeling Guide: Angel Rock, Coral Island & Nearby Spots

Nilaveli has more than one place to go snorkeling. While Pigeon Island is the most well-known, many visitors also enjoy Angel Rock and Coral Island. Each place has a different feeling and different timing.

Angel Rock

Angel Rock is closer to the beach and usually needs only a short boat ride. It is a good choice when you want less travel time and more time in the water. The reef is smaller than Pigeon Island but often feels quieter. Many first-time snorkelers like this option.

Coral Island

• Coral Island is another popular choice near Nilaveli. As the name suggests, the focus is on coral and the fish that live around it.
• In recent years I have noticed many budget travellers combining a lagoon trip with Coral Island snorkeling. They do a 1.5-hour lagoon tour first and then continue to Coral Island on the same day. It is a practical way to see two different sides of Nilaveli without spending too much.

A Memory from Coral Island (Night Snorkeling)

• About ten years ago I took four guests on a lagoon trip that continued into the evening. After the lagoon we went snorkeling at night near Coral Island. The captain used a torch and bait from the boat. That night he caught two king fish.
• We returned home, prepared a simple BBQ with the fresh fish, added salad and French fries, and set up a table near the lagoon. The guests were very happy. They told me they had never experienced anything like that before — fresh seafood, cooked right there, and eaten by the water. They said they loved the fresh food of Nilaveli.
• That kind of simple, personal evening stays in the memory of both the guests and the guide.

How to Choose

• Angel Rock → shorter trip, quieter, good for beginners
• Coral Island → often combined with lagoon trip, good for budget travellers
• Pigeon Island → protected national park, wider reef area

The sea changes every day. The best choice depends on the weather, the time you have, and the kind of experience you want.

I had a really nice experience going to Pigeon Island with them. I was travelling alone and they were very kind and flexible, and the price was the best I could find. The diver made the whole experience easy and pleasant and was happy to help me even though I was on my own.

Snorkelling at Pigeon Island and Angel Rock was an incredible and wonderful experience, and Sas and his team were extremely professional and very attentive. At Pigeon Island we saw sharks and turtles – huge ones – as well as colourful fish and beautiful corals. It was so lovely that the next day we went back for the Angel Rock sunrise snorkelling trip – it was incredible. You simply can’t visit Sri Lanka without going on this excursion with this team.

Super cool Tour, awesome tour guides, had a oot of fun. Everything was as they‘ve explained beforehand. 6am you head out to see the whales, they provide ypu water and fruits. They as well really know their stuff, always were at the right spot to actually see the whales
