Whale & Dolphin Watching in Nilaveli – A Local Guide

Whale watching and dolphin watching from Nilaveli are two related but different experiences. Dolphins are seen more regularly. Whales are possible, especially in certain months, but never guaranteed. I always explain this clearly to guests before we leave the beach.

Dolphin Watching from Nilaveli

Most trips start early from Nilaveli Beach, usually around 6:00 AM. The boat heads out while the sea is still calm. On many mornings in season we find spinner dolphins and bottlenose dolphins.
I still go on many of these trips myself. When I started this work I decided I would not only send the captains. I want to be there to explain the sea and the animals to the guests. I also often bring my family because the children are always eager to see the dolphins.
In peak season many boats come out at the same time. Sometimes the dolphins are surrounded and it becomes harder to see them clearly. Even when we find a good place, the situation can change quickly. I always tell guests the truth about this.
One morning I still remember clearly: we shared a boat with English and French guests. That day a very large number of dolphins came and stayed around our boat for a long time. Everyone was quiet and happy. I have not seen a morning exactly like that again in the last three years.
Many times I have watched groups of dolphins with small ones among them. It looks like the parents are teaching the babies how to jump and roll in the air.

Whale Watching from Nilaveli

Whale watching is different. The boat usually goes farther out and the trip can last longer. Sperm whales are the ones we see more often near the harbour area. Blue whales normally stay in deeper water, so seeing one closer to the harbour is rare and lucky.
In August 2024 and again in 2025 I was with customers when we saw a blue whale near Trincomalee harbour during a normal trip. The guests were very excited because blue whales are usually only seen in the deep sea. On that morning the water rose in six or seven places as the whales dived. It was a quiet and stunning moment.
In September 2026, for some days, we saw sperm whales near the harbour almost every day. They were sometimes playing with dolphins. We saw sperm whales close to the boat several times.
In the off season, while I was out fishing, I once saw a sperm whale with her babies. It was the first time I had seen that. The mother stayed close to the young ones. That quiet moment has stayed with me.

Honest Expectations

I never promise a whale or even dolphins. The large majority of dolphin trips in season do see them. Whales are less certain. The best realistic chances for whales are usually in March–April and August–September. Outside these windows the sea can be windier and conditions less predictable.
We check with other boats and local fishermen in the morning to improve our chances, but the final decision always belongs to the ocean.

Practical Points

  • Early morning start (around 6:00 AM)
  • Life jackets provided
  • Boat can feel bumpy on windy days
  • Sea-sickness tablets help some people
  • Longer whale trips mean more time in the sun and open sea

Frequently Asked Questions

On most trips in season yes, but nothing is 100% guaranteed. This is the open sea.

No. I never say that. March–April and August–September give the best realistic chance, especially for sperm whales near the harbour. Blue whales are rarer.

The dolphin trip is shorter and focused on dolphins. The whale trip continues farther out and lasts longer for a better chance of seeing whales.

Yes, many families join. It depends on the child and the length of the trip.

Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, light clothes, and sea-sickness tablets if needed.

I had a really nice experience going to Pigeon Island with them. I was travelling alone and they were very kind and flexible, and the price was the best I could find. The diver made the whole experience easy and pleasant and was happy to help me even though I was on my own. I really appreciated the kindness and willingness to accommodate me! I really enjoyed it!!

Very well arranged, guide was helpful and had a good experience. Everything was taken care of well. Marine life isn't that great early Oct tho.

Owner's reply
Thank you, Anoushka, for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad you found everything well arranged and that our guide was helpful throughout the trip. Early October can bring changing sea and marine conditions, so sightings and marine life can vary from day to day. We always prefer to keep expectations realistic rather than promise what nature cannot guarantee. It was a pleasure having you with us, and we truly appreciate your visit. We hope to welcome you again in Nilaveli. 🌊😊

Snorkelling at Pigeon Island and Angel Rock was an incredible and wonderful experience, and Sas and his team were extremely professional and very attentive. At Pigeon Island we saw sharks and turtles – huge ones – as well as colourful fish and beautiful corals. It was so lovely that the next day we went back for the Angel Rock sunrise snorkelling trip – it was incredible. You simply can’t visit Sri Lanka without going on this excursion with this team.
