Lover’s Leap: The Cliff With a Story, Seen From the Water

Most people see Lover’s Leap from the top — standing at Swami Rock, next to Koneswaram Temple, looking down at the cliff edge. We see it from underneath, from the boat, looking up at the rock walls closing in around you as you pass through the narrow channel at its base.

It’s one of the stops on our Dolphin Watching and City Tour Sightseeing trips, and it’s usually the moment guests go quiet for a second — the cliffs rise straight up on both sides, and the water underneath turns a deep, cold blue.

The Story Behind the Name

The most common version goes back to the Dutch colonial period — a young woman, usually named Francina van Reed, engaged to a Dutch officer who sailed back to Europe when his service ended. Local legend says she climbed this cliff, watched his ship disappear, and jumped into the sea below. A pillar still stands at the top today, though even the tragedy itself has some disputed detail in the historical record — we tell it the way it’s passed down locally, as legend.

There’s also an older story from the Ramayana — that the split in the rock was made by King Ravana, and that this is why some call the site Ravana’s Cleft.

Seeing It From the Boat

From sea level, Swami Rock rises straight out of the water, and the narrow gap at its base is a striking place to pass through by boat. If you’re joining our Dolphin Watching trip or a City Tour Sightseeing outing, this is one of the stops along the way — part of seeing Trincomalee’s coastline the way it’s best seen: from the water, looking up.

I had a really nice experience going to Pigeon Island with them. I was travelling alone and they were very kind and flexible, and the price was the best I could find. The diver made the whole experience easy and pleasant and was happy to help me even though I was on my own. I really appreciated the kindness and willingness to accommodate me! I really enjoyed it!!

Very well arranged, guide was helpful and had a good experience. Everything was taken care of well. Marine life isn't that great early Oct tho.

Owner's reply
Thank you, Anoushka, for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad you found everything well arranged and that our guide was helpful throughout the trip. Early October can bring changing sea and marine conditions, so sightings and marine life can vary from day to day. We always prefer to keep expectations realistic rather than promise what nature cannot guarantee. It was a pleasure having you with us, and we truly appreciate your visit. We hope to welcome you again in Nilaveli. 🌊😊

Snorkelling at Pigeon Island and Angel Rock was an incredible and wonderful experience, and Sas and his team were extremely professional and very attentive. At Pigeon Island we saw sharks and turtles – huge ones – as well as colourful fish and beautiful corals. It was so lovely that the next day we went back for the Angel Rock sunrise snorkelling trip – it was incredible. You simply can’t visit Sri Lanka without going on this excursion with this team.

Super cool Tour, awesome tour guides, had a oot of fun. Everything was as they‘ve explained beforehand. 6am you head out to see the whales, they provide ypu water and fruits. They as well really know their stuff, always were at the right spot to actually see the whales

Owner's reply
Thank you, Johannes. We’re glad the early 6 AM start worked well and that the guides were in the right place when the whales appeared. Happy the water and fruit were useful on the boat. We appreciate you sharing this.
